About

Pilates for Life

  • About Me

I am Natasha Schoonees, the owner of Pilates for Life.

I started my Pilates training in 2007 with Andri Marais and completed my Advanced Classical Pilates Mat and equipment course in 2010 and further qualified as a MAP trainer in 2018. When I started teaching in 2008 I led classes at different studios in Pretoria and I was an instructor at Absolute Pilates SA for 13 years.

I am passionate about Pilates and MAP, because I see how it improves people’s lives. It is more than exercise. It changes the way you look and feel inside and out.

  • About The Studio

The first Pilates For Life studio opened in 2021.
The meaning of the name 'Pilates for Life' is that is gives life and you will want to do it for life!

It makes me happy to see how my clients enjoy the classes and how their bodies transform. Classes are interesting and fun with different props used to keep you engaged and to provide a full workout.

What makes the studio unique is the use of a combination of Pilates and MAP principles that are applied in all the classes: Movement comes from breath, Balance, Core control and the use of your abdominals muscles, gluteus muscles and shoulder blade muscles.

  • About Pilates

Pilates was invented by Joseph Pilates, who in 1929 opened a gym where he started teaching Pilates along with his wife, Clara.

Joseph always welcomed both men and women into his studio and soon injured dancers began to hear that the method – centered on strengthening what we now call the core, but which Pilates disciples term the Powerhouse – could restore them to health. They flocked to his studio.

The principles of Pilates were astonishingly modern. They revolved around what’s known today as functional fitness, meaning that the goal wasn’t to look good or get toned. The aim was to master everyday life and tasks.

The method revolved around a series of 34 mat exercises, performed in sequence, that today remain at the heart of Pilates instruction.

    Quoted from the Wirecutter website

  • What is MAP?

MAP movement bridges the gap between movement as we know it and movement as we want it to be.

Is fear of movement holding you back? Let’s move out of defence into power and enable ourselves to move the way nature intended.

MAP is ideal for sport people and people with chronic pain and stiffness.

MAP teaches you to mobilise your fascia and how to breath to get out of the stress cycle.

MAP movement classes are for everybody. You don’t need to be strong or flexible – that is exactly what MAP movement improves.
